At the forefront of addressing the urgent issue of plastic waste, the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has launched an ambitious awareness campaign aimed at transforming attitudes towards proper plastic disposal and recycling on campus. This innovative drive, unveiled on April 9, 2025, marks a significant step toward sustainable practices within the academic community.
The centerpiece of the initiative is a series of custom-designed waste bins, meticulously crafted by MME students within their laboratory. These bins, designed specifically for the collection of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles, are now strategically located across the Ikole campus. The varied sizes of the bins are intended to accommodate diverse volumes of waste, ensuring that students and staff alike can easily dispose of their plastic waste.
The project, which stems from a strong commitment to combating environmental degradation, aims to reduce the campus’s plastic footprint by educating individuals about the importance of responsible waste management. As part of the awareness campaign, the bins feature eye-catching designs and informative messages about recycling and its impact on the environment, urging users to rethink their disposal habits.
Dr. (Mrs.) Chioma Madueke, the Head of the MME Department, was effusive in her praise for the students and faculty involved in the project. She highlighted the sense of unity that guided the initiative and credited it as a team effort that emphasized the department’s role in practical, environmentally conscious engineering solutions. “This project is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together towards a common cause,” Dr. Madueke said.
In a show of academic and administrative support, the Vice-Chancellor of FUOYE, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, also voiced his strong backing for the project. He lauded the MME department for their creativity and dedication in tackling the growing problem of plastic waste. “At FUOYE, we are committed to fostering an environment that not only nurtures academic excellence but also embraces sustainable practices that contribute positively to society,” said Prof. Fasina.
The campaign is designed to raise awareness on the pressing need to tackle plastic pollution at its source.
