In a bold step to modernise science education and empower students for real-world problem-solving, the Department of Chemistry at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has launched the Smart Chemistry Project. The innovative initiative was unveiled during the department’s inaugural alumni meeting and fundraising event, held to reconnect graduates with their alma mater and galvanise support for educational advancement.
The project, described as a transformative leap for scientific teaching and research in Nigeria, aims to equip the department with cutting-edge laboratories, hands-on training opportunities, and a redefined academic culture built on critical thinking and creativity. It is positioned to serve as a national model for scientific excellence and educational innovation.
Speaking at the event, Professor Adeyinka Adesina, Dean of the Faculty of Science, highlighted the importance of modern tools and methodologies in 21st-century science education. “It now requires cutting-edge tools, immersive experiences, and teaching that mirrors the demands of modern science and technology,” he said. “The Smart Chemistry Project seeks to address these demands, investing not only in infrastructure but also in students’ capacity to learn, innovate, and lead.”
The project focuses on equipping the department’s laboratories with state-of-the-art scientific instruments, including analytical chemistry devices, digital simulation software, and high-throughput data systems. These will allow students to engage with contemporary scientific problems in fields such as pharmaceuticals, energy, environmental chemistry, and nanotechnology.
“For true innovation to occur, our students must be exposed to the kind of training that ignites curiosity, deepens understanding, and inspires problem-solving,” Professor Adesina stated. “A well-equipped laboratory is not a luxury — it is a necessity. It is the workshop where theories are tested, new ideas are born, and scientific breakthroughs are made.”
The initiative also includes staff capacity-building, student mentorship, and collaboration with industry experts. With more than 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in the department, the Smart Chemistry Project is expected to significantly boost learning outcomes and research output at OAU.
Professor Adesina emphasised the historical impact of the Chemistry Department, noting its contributions to Nigeria’s scientific workforce. “Over the decades, the Department of Chemistry has played a central role in the training of competent scientists who have gone on to contribute to academia, industry, government, and public service,” he said.
Distinguished alumni from across the country attended the fundraising, pledging support for the project’s long-term sustainability. Some pledged to donate laboratory equipment, sponsor research grants, or offer internship opportunities to current students.
Beyond infrastructure, the project is expected to foster an academic environment that prepares students to tackle Nigeria’s developmental challenges through scientific research and technological innovation. “This project is not only a departmental reform,” Adesina noted. “We hope the Smart Chemistry Project will inspire similar transformations across departments and institutions nationwide, creating a ripple effect of educational renewal and scientific progress.”
As Nigeria seeks to build a knowledge-based economy, initiatives like OAU’s Smart Chemistry Project demonstrate how universities can bridge the gap between education and innovation, equipping the next generation of scientists to lead national and global transformation.
