Nigeria, represented by a team of students from Delta State, has emerged winner of the prestigious World School Debate Championship, held in Doha, Qatar.
The final stage of the global academic competition featured teams from the United States (State of Chicago), Qatar (host nation), and Nigeria. After a competitive showing, Nigeria secured a 5–1 aggregate victory, defeating Qatar 2–1 in the opening round and securing a 3–0 win in the final round to clinch the championship title.
The Delta State debate team had earlier earned the honour of representing Nigeria after winning the National Debate Championship, organised by the Presidency through the President’s School Debate Nigeria initiative.
The delegation to Qatar was led by the Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), who accompanied the students to represent the country at the international level.
Before their departure, the team was hosted by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the Government House in Asaba, where he offered prayers and charged them to bring the trophy back home.
Following their victory, the Delta State Government took to its official social media platforms to congratulate the students. “Congratulations to the outstanding team of students who represented Nigeria and emerged as world champions at the prestigious World School Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar,” the message read.
“Their eloquence, critical thinking, and determination have brought global honour to Delta State and made the nation proud. Their triumph is a testament to the governor’s strategic investment in education under the MORE Agenda,” the statement added.
The championship win has been widely celebrated across the country, reinforcing Delta State’s growing reputation as a hub for academic and intellectual excellence.
