The Federal Government has approved the sum of N4.2 billion for the funding of 158 high-impact research projects under the 2024 National Research Fund (NRF) grant cycle of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The approval followed a rigorous screening process conducted by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC), which reviewed 6,944 research concept notes submitted by academics from tertiary institutions across the country. The exercise was aimed at identifying original, solution-oriented proposals addressing key national development challenges.
In a statement, TETFund’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdulmumin Oniyangi, said the funding underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening research capacity and innovation across Nigeria’s higher education system. He noted that the grants cover a wide range of thematic areas, including science, engineering, technology, innovation, humanities, and social sciences, with multidisciplinary projects also supported under a cross-cutting category.
Oniyangi disclosed that a number of institutions distinguished themselves in both the volume of successful proposals and the total value of awards secured. Universities across the country will undertake critical studies in areas such as sustainable housing, artificial intelligence, robotics, smart agriculture, military health technology, and energy management. The projects are expected to not only advance academic scholarship but deliver practical, scalable solutions to real-world problems.
In a related development aimed at deepening innovation and entrepreneurship in higher education, the Federal Government has approved the establishment of 18 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hubs in TETFund-supported institutions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These hubs will serve as specialised centres for advanced technology development, equipped with core laboratories and workstations for electronics, 3D printing, laser technology, robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies.
Oniyangi explained that the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between research and industry by offering platforms where promising research outputs can be transformed into commercially viable products and scalable innovations. He added that the project aligns with the government’s broader objective of repositioning tertiary institutions as engines of innovation and national development.
Further reinforcing this agenda, the Federal Government has approved additional funding under the 2025 TETFund intervention cycle for selected universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Institutions across various states have been earmarked to receive substantial allocations for the development or expansion of their entrepreneurship centres and innovation hubs.
TETFund continues to play a pivotal role in supporting applied research and institutional capacity building through its strategic interventions. The NRF grant, in particular, is focused on addressing Nigeria’s pressing development needs in areas such as energy, health, agriculture, security, employment generation, and wealth creation.
By supporting both the academic and practical dimensions of research, the Fund aims to foster a pipeline of homegrown innovations and technologies that will reduce dependence on imports and strengthen Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
Oniyangi reaffirmed TETFund’s commitment to sustaining research excellence, innovation, and knowledge transfer in the country’s tertiary education sector. He stressed that the Fund remains focused on building a knowledge-based economy where education drives national growth and long-term development.
