The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework, a major initiative designed to strengthen the country’s education system by ensuring all teachers in both public and private schools undergo comprehensive background checks.
Spearheaded by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the framework aims to restore professionalism and accountability within the teaching profession. According to Dr. Alausa, the initiative is a critical step towards entrusting the education of future generations to individuals with verified moral character and professional qualifications.
The new framework will be integrated into the existing Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal. The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in a statement confirming the policy on Tuesday, said the move is expected to prevent impersonation, forgery, and the employment of unqualified staff in schools. This integration will enable real-time registration, licensing, and ongoing monitoring of teachers, creating a more robust system.
TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, highlighted additional features of the enhanced digital portal. She stated that the platform will not only verify teacher credentials but also support professional development through tools like AI-powered lesson planning.
