Federal Polytechnic Orogun, Delta State, has clinched first place at the National Engineering Quiz Competition organized by the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers, a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
The competition, held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the MOM Civic Centre in Warri, was themed “Applying Engineering Solutions to Tanker Explosion and Fire Outbreak.”
Orogun Polytechnic’s team, represented by Siemur Ohwavweoriete of Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Oyibocha Goodluck of Mechanical Engineering, scored 47 points out of 50, securing the top spot ahead of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), who finished second and third respectively.
Their winning presentation proposed the use of advanced fire-resistant tanker materials, real-time leakage detection, and emergency response technologies—solutions described by judges as both practical and groundbreaking.
Receiving the students on Monday, September 22, 2025, the Rector, Prof. Duke Okoro, praised their achievement, calling it a reflection of the institution’s strong academic foundation despite being a relatively young polytechnic.
“With the quality of our lecturers, instructors, and technologists, this is the type of result you get,” Prof. Okoro said. “When your curriculum is enriched with industry-driven, practice-oriented content, excellence becomes inevitable.”
He described the duo as “trailblazers who embody meritocracy, innovation, and excellence,” and announced automatic scholarships covering their tuition fees for the remainder of their National Diploma programme. In addition, he awarded them ₦50,000 each on behalf of the institution, alongside the ₦100,000 prize presented by the competition organizers.
“This is how we reward performance at Federal Polytechnic Orogun,” the Rector said. “Excellence will never go unnoticed here. We want to raise a generation of innovators who will provide solutions to Nigeria’s toughest challenges.”
Speaking on behalf of the team, Ohwavweoriete thanked the institution for its support, noting that the Polytechnic’s motto, “Innovate and be great,” inspired them to strive for excellence.
The Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers also commended the Polytechnic’s presentation, highlighting its relevance in tackling Nigeria’s recurring tanker fire tragedies.
The victory has brought prestige to Federal Polytechnic Orogun and positioned its students as emerging innovators in safety engineering solutions.
