The management of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (formerly Abia Poly), has announced a series of reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and modernizing academic processes, including a ban on the sale of handouts and the abolition of statements of results.
The Rector, Dr. Christopher Okoro, disclosed the measures during a courtesy visit by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State.
According to him, graduating students will now receive verifiable digital certificates embedded with QR codes immediately after completing their programmes, a move designed to end years of delays and eliminate multiple charges often associated with result collection.
Dr. Okoro further stated that lecturers can no longer compel students to purchase handouts or textbooks as a prerequisite for grades. He directed that all examination results must be uploaded within four to six weeks, cutting off opportunities for exploitation.
Beyond academic reforms, the rector highlighted major institutional progress, including the clearance of 36 months of salary arrears, full accreditation for all 33 existing programmes, and the introduction of 17 new courses. Among the new offerings are Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Mechatronics, Fashion Design Technology, and Leather Technology, the first of its kind in Southern Nigeria.
He credited Abia State Governor Alex Otti for supporting the institution by clearing salary debts, approving staff promotions, and funding critical infrastructure such as hostels, roads, and a new auditorium.
With these reforms, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic says it is set to begin academic activities at its Osisioma campus in the 2025/2026 academic session.
