Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) have appealed to Governor Ademola Adeleke to intervene in what they describe as an unbearable increase in both tuition and accommodation fees at the institution.
In an open letter dated October 4, 2025, and signed by “All Concerned Students of Osun State University,” the students decried the rising cost of living and learning in the school, warning that many undergraduates could be forced to abandon their studies.
According to the letter, the official university hostel, which accommodates four students per room, now costs ₦180,000 per student, totalling ₦720,000 per room. Private hostels within and around the university charge between ₦500,000 and ₦600,000 for self-contained apartments, while single rooms without conveniences go for as high as ₦300,000 annually.
“This steady and almost annual 100% increase in accommodation fees has made it nearly impossible for many students, especially those from low- and middle-income families, to cope,” the letter read.
Students also lamented a sharp rise in tuition, saying the new fees introduced this session were “not acceptable” and described them as “wickedness” and “a threat to the future of youths in the state.”
A section of the viral appeal circulating on social media read:
“Governor Adeleke, please do something about it before the opposition starts using it to campaign against you. Dear Regha, please use your platform to call out the management of Osun State University, Osogbo. They increased school fees by over ₦700,000 this session. This is wickedness. The future of our children is at stake. You can involve the Governor too. Dear PDP, we voted for your candidate to make life easy for Osun people, but we are witnessing the opposite. An increase of over ₦500,000 is wickedness. Election is around the corner. Put an end to this new fee.”
The students urged the state government to engage with the school management to review and regulate hostel and tuition charges, describing the current situation as “a clear threat to access to education.”
They further proposed government-assisted housing or fee subsidies to cushion the hardship, calling on Governor Adeleke to “demonstrate his commitment to students’ welfare and education in Osun State.”
