The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Sokoto State Wing, has marked the 2025 World Teachers’ Day with a grand celebration held at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Institute of Qur’an and General Studies, bringing together educators, policymakers, and government officials to honour the dedication of teachers and acknowledge the state’s ongoing investment in education.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmad Ladan Ala, commended teachers across the state for their unwavering dedication to duty. He praised the NUT for organizing the event and reaffirmed the Sokoto State Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers under the leadership of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, FCNA.
Prof. Ala highlighted key government initiatives, including the consistent payment of the national minimum wage to teachers and the provision of incentives aimed at enhancing the quality of teaching and learning in the state.
In his address, Comrade Murtala Muhammad Sokoto, Chairman of the NUT Sokoto State Wing, expressed appreciation to Governor Aliyu for the visible transformation in the education sector, pledging the Union’s continued partnership with government efforts to strengthen basic and secondary education.
The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, urged teachers to remain committed to their duties, announcing that primary school head teachers would soon begin receiving cash imprest, aligning their privileges with those of secondary school principals.
A representative of the National President of NUT, Comrade Nasiru Abubakar, also commended the progress recorded in Sokoto’s education system, describing the state as a model for others to emulate.
Goodwill messages were delivered by several dignitaries, including Aisha Nasiru Zarummai, Executive Secretary, Teachers Service Board; Prof. Mustapha Namakka Tukur, Executive Secretary, Female Education Board; Dr. Mansur Isa Buhari, AGILE Project Coordinator; the Coordinator of NTI Sokoto; and the Director of Labour Matters, Sokoto State.
A keynote paper titled “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession” was presented by Dr. Nasiru Abubakar Katami, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and innovation in modern teaching practice.
The celebration featured the presentation of awards to outstanding educators for the year 2025. The awardees included:

Each recipient received gifts and commendations in recognition of their exemplary service to education.
In recognition of his administration’s outstanding contribution to education, Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto was honoured with the Best Performing Governor in the Education Sector award. Similar honours were presented to Prof. Ahmad Ladan Ala, Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, and the First Lady of Sokoto State, Hajia Fatima Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, for their respective roles in promoting educational advancement.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the NUT State Publicity Secretary, who appreciated all stakeholders, guests, and participants for their support and commitment to uplifting education in Sokoto State.
