The management of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has expelled three students for illegal possession of firearms during the recent Students Union Government (SUG) election on campus.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Awoke, made the announcement over the weekend during the inauguration of the newly elected SUG executives at the university’s main campus in Abakaliki.
Professor Awoke said the disciplinary action was necessary to uphold discipline and prevent violence on campus, emphasizing the university’s zero tolerance for criminal activities among students.
The expulsions followed the arrest of the three students by the Ebonyi State Police. The Police Public Relations Officer confirmed that Lawrence Azubuike, Ibe Kenneth and Njoku Joshua were apprehended in connection with a shooting incident during the election.
The suspects allegedly fired gunshots to disperse voters during the announcement of the election results on September 30, 2025. One of the bullets struck a student who was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki for medical treatment. A locally made pistol was recovered from the suspects.
Professor Awoke condemned the violent incident and warned that the university would not tolerate cultism, examination malpractice or intimidation involving weapons. He added that the case had been handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution.
The Vice Chancellor reiterated EBSU’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment, stressing that any student involved in criminal conduct would face immediate expulsion and legal action.
The university described the expulsions as a necessary step to preserve peace on campus and deter others from engaging in similar acts.
