The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Management has declared Wednesday, January 14, and Thursday, January 15, 2026, as lecture-free days for all fresh students. This decision was made at a meeting held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, to enable fresh students to complete their documents’ verification and clearance in their various faculties and participate in the matriculation ceremony on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
According to the official statement, “This is to enable all fresh students to complete their documents’ verification and clearance in their various faculties as well as participate fully in the matriculation ceremony on Thursday, 15th January, 2026.” The university has urged all fresh students to ensure they pay the appropriate fees before matriculation, as those who fail to do so may not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.
The Nigeria Education News conducted random interviews with students to gather their views on the development. “I’m happy about the decision, it will give us enough time to get everything done,” said astudent from the department of Dramatic Arts. Another student from Political Science, Boluwatife expressed gratitude, saying, “This is a great relief, I was worried about how I would manage my documents and attend lectures at the same time.”
The lecture-free days are a welcome respite for fresh students, who are expected to complete their registration and clearance processes. The university has put in place measures to ensure a smooth process, and students are advised to take advantage of the opportunity.
The OAU Management has also reminded students that the matriculation ceremony is a significant event and all fresh students are expected to participate. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
