Junior Secondary School (JSS) Gurfata in Ibwa Ward, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stopped admitting new JSS1 students due to the lack of functional classrooms.
The school, which serves the Gurfata community, was damaged by a windstorm that further weakened its already fragile structures, leaving classrooms unsafe for use.
As a result, school authorities have been unable to accommodate new students, preventing many children in the community from accessing secondary education.
A civic organisation monitoring public infrastructure projects said the situation has lasted for several months without any intervention from relevant authorities.
The organisation stated that the problem was first reported in November 2024, but no repairs or temporary learning facilities have been provided.
It also noted that the school has not admitted new JSS1 students since 2024 because there are no usable classrooms.
The group questioned the claims by the FCT Administration about ongoing school renovations, noting that JSS Gurfata has received no attention.
It further criticised the lack of action from elected representatives and called on the FCT Administration and other relevant authorities to urgently rehabilitate the school and provide temporary classrooms.
The situation has raised concerns about the state of public school infrastructure in the FCT and its impact on students’ access to education.
