A total of 111 students of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, will graduate with first-class degrees at the institution’s 34th Convocation Ceremony, scheduled to hold on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Faruk Adamu Kuta, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at the university’s main campus in Gidan Kwano, ahead of the ceremony, which coincides with the university’s 43rd Founders’ Day.
Professor Kuta explained that out of the 5,297 students graduating from the 2024/2025 academic session, 1,525 will receive second class upper degrees, 2,134 second class lower, while 631 and 37 will graduate with third class and pass degrees respectively. He added that 4,438 of the graduands will be awarded first degrees, alongside 73 postgraduate diplomas, 633 master’s degrees and 153 doctoral degrees.
Describing the convocation as more than a ceremonial event, the Vice-Chancellor said it represents a celebration of academic resilience, innovation and steady institutional progress. According to him, the ceremony provides an opportunity for the university to reflect on its development trajectory and reaffirm its vision in the global academic space.
Highlighting achievements recorded within the period under review, Professor Kuta said FUT Minna was ranked the seventh-best university in Nigeria in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, emerging as the highest-ranked specialised university in the country. He also noted that the university’s researchers secured the highest number of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund grants in the 2024 cycle, alongside producing 58 high-impact Q1 publications and seven patents.
He further disclosed that the institution secured a ₦1 billion TETFund Agricultural Commercial Farm Grant and was selected to participate in the TETFund Scholarship for Academic Staff Training in the North-Central zone. According to him, these developments underscore the university’s growing research capacity and relevance to national development.
Professor Kuta also announced that academic activities have commenced at the newly established College of Medical Sciences and Health Technology following approval by the National Universities Commission. He acknowledged the Abdulsamad Rabiu Africa Initiative for donating a male medical students’ hostel, as well as the Niger State Government for supporting the construction of a female hostel for medical students.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the university has completed and commissioned a fully equipped gross anatomy laboratory for the College of Medicine and a modern bioinformatics laboratory at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxins and Food Safety, describing the latter as one of only three such facilities in Nigerian universities. He said infrastructure upgrades were also carried out at the university clinic, indoor sports complex and guest house, alongside the ongoing construction of a 30-unit professorial complex aimed at encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration.
On quality assurance, Professor Kuta revealed that FUT Minna voluntarily underwent an international assessment by the United Kingdom Quality Assurance Agency in November 2025, noting that the exercise aligns with the institution’s commitment to maintaining global academic standards.
He said the coincidence of the convocation with the university’s Founders’ Day provides an opportunity to honour the vision of those who laid the institution’s foundation while renewing its commitment to excellence, innovation and community service.
The Vice-Chancellor called on the public and the media to participate in the convocation activities, reaffirming the university’s openness to partnerships that can translate research outputs into commercial ventures and employment opportunities for young people.
Also speaking, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the University Ceremonies Committee, Professor Uno Essang Uno, commended the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership and urged the media to continue to engage constructively with the institution.
