The Redeemed Christian Church of God has introduced a scholarship and youth rehabilitation initiative for children living around the Olusosun landfill in Lagos, as part of activities marking the 84th birthday of its General Overseer, Enoch Adeboye.
The church disclosed that the programme, implemented through its social intervention platform Reach4Christ, is designed to widen access to education while shielding vulnerable children from drug abuse and cult-related influences within the landfill community.
According to the organisers, the intervention responds to the harsh educational and social realities faced by families living around the dumpsite. The Chairman of Reach4Christ, Leke Adeboye, explained that the project combines structured learning with behavioural support to help children transition into formal schooling.
He said the initiative includes preparatory classes focused on literacy and numeracy, taught by trained facilitators in a community-based setting, with learning materials provided to participants. Children who qualify are also supported with full scholarships into nearby public primary schools, covering enrolment costs, uniforms, and essential school supplies.
Adeboye noted that the goal is to remove financial barriers that often push children out of school, ensuring consistent attendance and long-term academic participation rather than short-term enrolment.
Beyond academics, the programme integrates drug awareness education, anti-cultism sensitisation, mentorship, and counselling to address risks commonly associated with high-exposure environments. The organisers said these components are structured to promote early behavioural guidance and character development.
Vice-Chairman of Reach4Christ, Emmanuel Emefienim, described the initiative as part of a broader mission to bring hope to underserved communities. He noted that thousands of residents live within the landfill area under difficult conditions, making targeted intervention necessary.
He added that the Olusosun outreach represents one of several social impact efforts by the group aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable populations and creating pathways for a better future.
