The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, has urged newly admitted students to embrace discipline, determination, and academic excellence as the institution matriculated about 8,000 students for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Speaking during the ceremony in Abuja, Fawehinmi reminded the students that they are now ambassadors of the university, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University, and must conduct themselves in ways that uphold its reputation. He stressed that the institution maintains zero tolerance for indiscipline, including cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse, and other antisocial behaviour.
The vice-chancellor advised the students to take their studies seriously, noting that the certificates they would earn would reflect both character and learning. He assured them of the university’s commitment to providing mentorship, facilities, and an enabling environment, while emphasising that their success would ultimately depend on personal discipline and dedication.
Fawehinmi disclosed that more than 30,000 candidates applied for admission into the university, but only 8,000 were admitted due to capacity limitations and the institution’s commitment to maintaining quality standards. He described their admission as a privilege earned through merit and encouraged them to make wise choices throughout their academic journey.
He urged the students to cultivate collaboration, intellectual curiosity, and mutual respect, while using technology responsibly as a tool for learning rather than distraction. According to him, diligence, perseverance, and integrity remain essential qualities for success in any field.
Highlighting ongoing reforms, the vice-chancellor said the university is strengthening strategic partnerships, including collaboration with Galaxy Backbone to enhance information and communication technology infrastructure.
He acknowledged accommodation challenges but assured that efforts were ongoing through Tertiary Education Trust Fund support and public-private partnerships to expand hostel facilities and improve campus security.
A matriculating student, Miss Favour Cyprian, expressed excitement over gaining admission and pledged to remain focused throughout her studies. The ceremony concluded with the administration of the matriculation oath by the acting Registrar, Malam Mohammed Sambo, formally inducting the students into the university community.
