Governor Alex Otti of Abia State is set to commission three rehabilitated student hostels and flag off five new infrastructure projects at Abia State University as part of activities marking the institution’s forthcoming convocation ceremony. The projects, according to government officials, are aimed at improving student welfare and expanding academic facilities within the university system.
The State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor. He revealed that the completed projects include the full rehabilitation of Hostels A, B, and C, which had long suffered from infrastructural decay a challenge not uncommon in many Nigerian public universities.
Kanu further explained that the governor would also flag off several new projects during the convocation week. These include the construction of a Faculty of Law, a modern cafeteria, a 5,000-capacity male hostel, a 5,000-capacity female hostel, and a Faculty of Agriculture. The Nigeria Education News gathered that these developments are part of a broader effort by the state government to reposition tertiary education in Abia and make its institutions more competitive nationally.
The Commissioner also highlighted recent academic activities within the state’s tertiary institutions, noting that Abia State University matriculated 7,533 new students, while Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic admitted 5,100 students. According to him, the figures reflect growing confidence in the state’s higher education system, despite ongoing concerns about infrastructure and funding across Nigeria’s university and polytechnic sectors.
In addition, several prominent Nigerians are expected to participate in the convocation ceremony. These include the Ooni of Ife, Allen Onyema, Stella Okoli, and Barth Nnaji, with some slated to receive honorary degrees, while Nnaji is expected to deliver the convocation lecture. The gathering is anticipated to attract national attention and reinforce the university’s academic and cultural relevance.
Beyond the university, Kanu noted that the state government has also approved funding for multiple infrastructure projects across Abia, including urban renewal efforts in Umuahia and road construction in over 51 locations. He added that the establishment of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority is intended to extend development beyond Aba and Umuahia.
