An entrepreneurship scholar and public sector administrator, Dr. Lawal Aminu Bala, has called for stronger integration of research, policy, and governance in Nigeria, stressing that education must translate into practical solutions for national development.
Speaking in an interview with The Nigeria Education News, Bala said the country needs leaders equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge to address complex economic challenges and drive sustainable development.
Bala, who currently serves as the Pioneer General Manager of the Katsina State Assets Management Agency, said his academic journey — which began with a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy — was shaped by determination, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to public service.
Over the years, he expanded his academic portfolio with a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship and Business Management, multiple Master of Science degrees in areas including Rural Finance and Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, Islamic Finance and Development, Business and Commercial Law, and Assets and Facility Management, before earning a PhD in Entrepreneurship. He is currently pursuing a second doctoral degree in Development Finance.
Beyond academic qualifications, Bala also holds several professional fellowships and certifications in forensic accounting, risk and loan management, management consulting, taxation, and financial analysis, reflecting his broad engagement with finance and governance systems.
According to him, the pursuit of multiple qualifications is not about titles but about building the capacity required to tackle societal challenges.
“Each qualification represents a stage of preparation. Education should equip individuals to solve real problems and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.
Bala explained that his motivation was partly shaped by the long-standing HND and Bachelor of Science dichotomy in Nigeria’s education system, which often places polytechnic graduates at a disadvantage in the labour market.
Rather than accept the limitation, he said he chose to respond through academic excellence and continuous learning, progressing from polytechnic education to advanced postgraduate research.
He also emphasised the need for Nigeria to better utilise research findings in shaping policies and economic strategies.
“Nigeria does not lack research capacity. What we need is stronger integration between academia, policymakers, and industry so that research can inform decision-making and institutional reforms,” he said.
Bala added that strengthening institutions remains a key priority in his current role, noting that the Katsina State Assets Management Agency is working to establish frameworks for transparent asset management, institutional sustainability, and performance-based governance.
He further stressed the importance of mentoring young Nigerians to pursue education with purpose, encouraging students and scholars to focus on knowledge that contributes to innovation, productivity, and ethical leadership.
According to him, the long-term goal is to build institutions and systems that outlive individuals while promoting inclusive economic growth and responsible governance.
Bala’s academic and professional journey, he noted, reflects a broader belief that education, when pursued with discipline and purpose, remains a powerful instrument for national transformation.
