University of Port Harcourt has officially inaugurated its 36th Convocation Ceremony Committee, signaling the start of preparations for the institution’s upcoming graduation events scheduled for May.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Council Chambers on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Owunari Abraham Georgewill, who charged committee members to ensure a smooth and memorable exercise.
Describing the convocation as a major academic milestone, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised its importance as a platform to showcase the university’s achievements and uphold its reputation for excellence.
He urged members of the committee to work in synergy, stressing the need for coordination across all units involved in the planning and execution of the event.
The committee is chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Rosemary Ogu, and includes representatives from key departments such as administration, security, media, logistics, and protocol.
According to the university management, the convocation ceremony will run from May 18 to May 23, 2026, featuring a series of activities lined up to celebrate graduating students.
These include a convocation lecture, award presentations, and the formal conferment of degrees across various faculties.
The inauguration marks a significant step in ensuring that all logistical and ceremonial arrangements are put in place ahead of the week-long academic event.
University officials expressed confidence that, with early preparations underway, the 36th convocation will reflect the institution’s longstanding tradition of excellence and academic distinction.
