The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor A. S. Bamire, has described veteran journalist and publisher, Dele Momodu, as a doyen of Nigerian journalism whose influence continues to shape national discourse and inspire generations.
Bamire made the remarks during the 2026 Library Week of the university’s Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, where Momodu was conferred with the Distinguished Ambassador of the Library Excellence Award at a ceremony held at Oduduwa Hall.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the honour recognises Momodu’s enduring contributions to media, scholarship, and nation-building, noting that his career has consistently projected Nigeria positively on the global stage.
“Chief Dele Momodu represents the very best of Nigerian journalism courage, intellect, and consistency,” Bamire said, adding that his contributions to public discourse, democracy, and mentorship of young journalists remain immeasurable.
Also speaking at the event, a former journalist now serving in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office delivered an emotional tribute, describing Momodu as a towering figure whose influence has shaped both careers and convictions.
“Chief Dele Momodu is not just a journalist; he is a movement, a school, and an enduring reference point for excellence,” he said, recalling personal encounters that he described as “masterclasses” in depth, clarity, and professional insight.
The tribute further highlighted Momodu’s broader impact beyond journalism, noting his role in shaping Nigeria’s narrative, promoting culture, and elevating the media as a platform for national development.
In separate goodwill messages, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) described Momodu as a towering figure whose contributions have strengthened the profession and enhanced its global relevance.
In her remarks, Dr. Adeagbo also described the recognition as well deserved, emphasizing that Momodu’s career reflects the transformative power of media in advancing national development.
“We are celebrating not just a journalist, but an institution in himself,” she said, noting his consistent use of media to inform, educate, and positively influence society.
The event also featured the inauguration of the H.O. Library Club, with Momodu serving as Guest Reader, as part of activities marking the 2026 Library Week themed “Building a Knowledge Society: Library and Information as Variables in Academia-Industry Performance.”
Momodu’s portrait, prominently displayed at the venue, symbolised a career defined by excellence, resilience, and lasting impact in Nigerian journalism.
