The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has confirmed the death of a Part IV medical student, Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, who reportedly collapsed during an examination.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the incident occurred during a clinical viva examination when the student complained of chest pain.
The statement noted that Adewole was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow medical students present at the venue, as efforts were made to stabilise his condition.
Despite prompt medical intervention and attempts to revive him, the student was confirmed dead shortly after, in what the university described as a sudden and tragic loss.
The development has sent shockwaves across the university community, particularly within the College of Health Sciences, where the deceased was undergoing his training.
Reacting to the incident, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to his colleagues and friends, describing the incident as painful and irreparable.
The university management also disclosed that it is engaging relevant authorities and the family of the deceased to provide necessary support while seeking to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragic development adds to growing concerns around student health and emergency response systems within Nigerian universities, especially in high-pressure academic environments such as medical training.
