The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has launched the second edition of the Eko Schools Arts and Crafts Competition, positioning it as a platform to connect classroom learning with real-world creative opportunities for students.
Unveiling the 2026 edition in Ikeja, the Permanent Secretary, Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, said the initiative goes beyond a contest, describing it as a deliberate effort to nurture artistic talent and prepare young people for roles within the creative economy.
The competition, themed “This is Lagos!”, is open to students in secondary and tertiary institutions and is designed to showcase local culture while building practical skills relevant to global creative industries.
According to the ministry, the programme builds on the success of its maiden edition, which attracted over 150 entries and produced winners who gained scholarships and wider exposure for their work.
For the 2026 edition, organisers say the scope has been expanded to include mentorship from industry professionals, internship pathways, and increased visibility for participants across digital and physical platforms.
Officials note that the approach reflects a growing shift toward experiential learning, where students are equipped with hands-on skills that complement formal education.
Mrs. Oyekan-Ismaila added that the initiative aligns with the broader development agenda of the state, particularly in strengthening the entertainment and tourism sectors as viable career pathways for young people.
She called on schools, parents, and stakeholders to support student participation, stressing that early exposure to creative industries can shape future careers and economic opportunities.
Registration for the competition opened on May 4 and will close on May 25, with organisers expressing optimism that this year’s edition will attract wider participation and produce talents capable of representing Lagos on the global stage.
