The Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdulganiyu Vinod Obasa, has sponsored 18 young residents for vocational and technical training at the Lagos State Cooperative College as part of efforts to strengthen youth empowerment and local economic development.
The beneficiaries, selected for the 2025/2026 academic session, will undergo training across key skill areas including electrical installation, plumbing and pipefitting, welding and fabrication, computer science, and cooperative economics and management.
According to the council chairman, the initiative is designed to equip young people with practical and employable skills that can drive self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and long-term economic stability.
He noted that the programme aligns with the local government’s broader strategy to reduce youth unemployment and create pathways for sustainable livelihoods within the community.
Obasa also addressed public concerns regarding the selection process, stating that beneficiaries were chosen based on participation and completion of application requirements, rather than ethnic, religious, or personal considerations.
He emphasised that Agege remains a diverse community and that the administration is committed to ensuring that opportunities provided through government programmes are inclusive and accessible to all residents.
The chairman further encouraged other youths in the area to take advantage of similar initiatives in the future, stressing that active participation is key to benefiting from government-driven empowerment programmes.
Observers say the initiative highlights the growing role of local governments in bridging skills gaps and supporting technical education as a viable pathway for youth development.
