The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has expanded its environmental sustainability campaign to schools and public institutions in Badagry, with hundreds of tree seedlings planted across key locations in the area.
The exercise formed part of the agency’s statewide tree planting initiative aimed at promoting environmental protection, climate action, and greener communities across Lagos State.
The week-long campaign, coordinated by the Head of Tree Planting and Maintenance Department, Mrs. Adebimpe Kuponu, on behalf of LASPARK General Manager, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, targets the planting of 554 trees in strategic locations within Badagry.
Schools captured in the exercise include Muslim Primary School, Ansar-Ud-Deen Society Model Nursery and Primary School and Badagry Grammar School.
Other public institutions and facilities covered include the Badagry Local Government Secretariat, Badagry City Hall, General Hospital Badagry perimeter fence, Lagos Theatre perimeter fence, Badagry Cemetery perimeter fence, Muslim Praying Ground perimeter fence, and the Lagos State Judiciary Complex in Badagry.
At the council secretariat, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Babatunde Hunpe, officially flagged off the exercise by planting trees within the premises.
Speaking during the event, Hunpe described tree planting as a long-term investment in environmental sustainability, public health, and the wellbeing of future generations. He noted that the initiative supports ongoing efforts to tackle climate change, flooding, erosion, and rising temperatures linked to rapid urbanisation.
According to him, trees contribute beyond beautification by improving air quality, reducing heat intensity, enhancing biodiversity, and serving as natural carbon sinks, especially in coastal communities such as Badagry.
He also urged residents, schools, and community stakeholders to protect and nurture the planted trees in order to sustain the environmental benefits of the initiative.
The exercise attracted LASPARK officials, community leaders, environmental officers, local government staff, and residents who participated in the campaign aimed at building a cleaner and greener Lagos
