Kwara State University has awarded undergraduate research grants worth ₦100,000 each to 44 students across 10 faculties as part of efforts to strengthen innovation, problem-solving, and research culture within the institution.
The beneficiaries emerged successful at the university’s 15th Undergraduate Research Grant Award Ceremony held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Speaking during the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, said the initiative was designed to encourage students to engage in meaningful research capable of addressing societal challenges and contributing to national development.
According to him, the university remains committed to producing graduates equipped not only with theoretical knowledge but also with practical solutions to contemporary issues affecting society.
“The funds given to the undergraduate researchers are not just financial support but an investment in ideas and the future. KWASU will continue to push for research that is relevant and impactful,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
Professor Jimoh explained that the institution had consistently introduced programmes and initiatives aimed at transforming students into innovators, entrepreneurs, and solution providers capable of competing globally.
He stressed that research remains a critical component of academic excellence and national growth, noting that early exposure to research activities would better prepare students for future academic and professional pursuits.
The Vice-Chancellor further encouraged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the grants by focusing on projects capable of generating positive impact within their communities and beyond.
Earlier, the Director of the Centre for Research and Development, Professor Abdulkabir Hussain Solihu, disclosed that a total of 224 research proposals were submitted by students from various faculties across the university.
He explained that after a rigorous screening and evaluation process, 44 proposals were selected based on originality, relevance, innovation, feasibility, and potential societal impact.
Professor Solihu commended the growing interest of students in research activities, describing it as evidence of the university’s expanding academic and intellectual culture.
He noted that the undergraduate research grant initiative has continued to serve as a platform for nurturing young researchers and encouraging critical thinking among students.
The director added that the selected projects cut across diverse fields and disciplines, reflecting the university’s multidisciplinary approach to research and development.
Many students who attended the ceremony also expressed excitement over the opportunity, noting that the financial support would significantly assist them in carrying out quality research projects without major financial constraints.
The initiative further reinforces Kwara State University’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s emerging institutions prioritising research, innovation, and student-driven development.
