The Ogun State Government has activated emergency environmental and public health response measures following another chemical odour incident that affected students and residents in parts of Ijebu Ode.
The incident, which reportedly impacted several schools within the area, triggered immediate intervention from government agencies, with affected students receiving medical attention as authorities intensified investigations into the source of the odour.
Officials of the Ogun State Government, including the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, visited some of the affected students undergoing treatment, assuring residents that necessary measures were being taken to safeguard public health and prevent further exposure.
The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) confirmed that elevated methane concentrations were detected in parts of the affected communities through the state’s air quality monitoring system.
According to the government, a multi-agency emergency response team comprising environmental regulators, health officials, and emergency management personnel has been deployed to assess the situation, monitor air quality levels, and determine the exact cause of the incident.
Residents were advised to remain calm while adhering strictly to safety precautions, including avoiding open flames and reporting symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, breathing difficulties, or unusual discomfort to nearby healthcare facilities immediately.
The incident has once again raised concerns over environmental safety and the potential impact of hazardous emissions on schools and surrounding communities, particularly as students remain vulnerable to prolonged exposure.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and assured residents that further updates would be communicated as more findings emerge.
The Ogun State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives, public health, and environmental safety across the state.
