At the matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, delivered a compelling charge to newly admitted diploma students, urging them to strive for academic excellence and personal discipline. The event, held at the university’s main campus in Ojo, was attended by dignitaries, faculty members, and excited students eager to embark on their academic journey.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Afisi, Olatunji-Bello emphasized LASU’s commitment to shaping future leaders through rigorous academic training and character development. She reiterated that the university is a student-centered institution dedicated to providing a robust learning environment where students can maximize their potential.
The Vice-Chancellor described LASU as an institution that fosters both intellectual and moral growth. She encouraged students to take advantage of the university’s resources and maintain high academic standards, as securing excellent grades would be a prerequisite for transitioning into full-time undergraduate programs through direct entry.
“I rejoice with all of you for gaining admission into this prestigious university, and I also congratulate your parents and guardians for supporting your dreams of acquiring a quality education. However, with this opportunity comes the responsibility to commit to excellence and discipline,” she stated.
Acknowledging that university life offers a newfound sense of freedom, Olatunji-Bello warned students that such freedom comes with corresponding responsibilities. She stressed that LASU prides itself on cultivating students who are not only academically sound but also morally upright. She further explained that ethical values and discipline remain integral to the institution’s culture.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the importance of adhering to university rules and regulations, cautioning students against engaging in any form of deviant behavior. She reminded them that LASU has zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, and other unethical activities, adding that offenders would face strict disciplinary actions.
“You must avoid vices that can put your future at risk. Shun cultism, be mindful of your associations, and always conduct yourselves in a manner befitting of future leaders. LASU is committed to grooming well-rounded individuals who will make positive contributions to society,” she advised.
In addition to behavioral expectations, Olatunji-Bello informed the students that LASU does not permit diploma students to form or belong to any student associations. This policy, she explained, is aimed at ensuring that students remain focused on their studies and avoid distractions that could hinder their academic progress.
