Gregory University Uturu has recorded a major milestone in medical education with the induction of 83 new medical doctors, the highest in its history, during its third medical induction ceremony.
The event, which took place at the university’s College of Medicine, marked the highest number of graduates inducted into the medical profession since the institution’s medical programme was established.
Administering the Hippocratic Oath on behalf of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), the Registrar of the Council, Dr Fatima Kyari, represented by Dr Tijani A. Mandaka, commended the university for maintaining high academic standards in medical training. She urged the inductees to uphold integrity, compassion, and accountability in their professional practice.
“You are entering a profession that demands discipline and humanity. Approach your duties with a sense of service and responsibility to your patients and the nation,” she said.
Chancellor of the university, Mr Okechukwu Gregory Ibe (Jnr), congratulated the new doctors, encouraging them to embrace continuous learning and remain committed to professional excellence.
“You are stepping into a noble calling. Stay curious, stay determined, and carry forward the torch of quality healthcare wherever you serve,” he said.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Cele Njoku, in her address, urged the inductees to combine knowledge with empathy in their approach to healthcare delivery. She emphasised that the medical profession must be guided by a deep sense of compassion for humanity.
“As professionals trained in one of the most vital fields, your duty is not only to cure, but also to care. Let your actions reflect the values of professionalism and compassion,” she said.
The Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor S.A.U. Offiah, reminded the graduates that society expects much from them. He stressed the importance of collaboration, teamwork, and lifelong learning as key components of a successful medical career.
Earlier, the Founder and Proprietor of Gregory University, Professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe, in a message delivered by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Uwaoma Uche, described the event as a fulfilment of his vision to empower humanity through education, particularly in the field of medicine.
“This institution was born out of a commitment to train skilled professionals who would serve as agents of change in society. Today’s induction affirms that vision,” he said.
The highlight of the ceremony was the valedictory speech delivered by Dr Chidera Ugoh, the best graduating student of the Medicine and Surgery Class of 2023. Dr Ugoh, who earned distinctions in several core subjects, expressed gratitude to the university’s management, lecturers, mentors, and her family for their support.
“We are grateful for the training, mentorship, and opportunities we have received. As we step into the field, we do so with pride, confidence, and a strong sense of purpose,” she said.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from the medical community, university officials, parents, and well-wishers, who gathered to celebrate what many described as a major stride in Gregory University’s growing contribution to the nation’s healthcare workforce.
