The Oyo State Government has directed 202 teachers who were not absorbed into the Post Primary Schools Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) to immediately return to their respective Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities (LGUBEAs), or risk having their salaries suspended.
Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), Dr Nureni Adeniran, issued the directive during a meeting with Education Secretaries from the 33 LGUBEAs held on Friday in Ibadan, the state capital.
The affected teachers were among the over 2,000 primary school educators seconded to TESCOM under the previous administration in October 2022. While the current government has since absorbed the majority into the post primary school system, 202 remain unintegrated due to issues such as limited vacancies and failure to meet transfer requirements.
Despite not being formally absorbed into TESCOM, Dr Adeniran disclosed that the teachers have continued to receive monthly salaries without reporting for duty at their original postings under OYOSUBEB.
“The teachers in question are currently floating, and their continued absence is affecting the board’s operations,” Adeniran said. “Their refusal to return to their LGUBEAs means their appointments remain unregularised.”
He warned that any further delay in complying with the directive would result in the suspension of their salaries, describing their actions as a clear violation of the directive issued by Governor Seyi Makinde.
“It is gross misconduct to flout the governor’s directive issued as far back as 2022. All non-integrated teachers must report to their respective LGUBEAs without further delay,” he added.
Dr Adeniran also instructed the immediate compilation of the names and local government areas of the affected teachers to facilitate enforcement.
Meanwhile, the OYOSUBEB chairman revealed that the state government, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has commenced implementation of the School Based Management Committee School Improvement Programme (SBMC SIP).
He explained that the initiative is aimed at promoting community ownership of public schools by channeling funds directly to School Based Management Committees for infrastructure development, procurement of learning materials and acquisition of educational equipment.
“This initiative is designed to expand access to quality education and promote equity across all basic education levels in Nigeria,” he said.
Adeniran urged Education Secretaries across the 33 LGUBEAs to closely monitor ongoing projects within their jurisdictions to ensure transparency and accountability.
