A civic organisation, Moting, has called on the Katsina State Government to declare a state of emergency in the education sector following the total collapse of the only primary school in Gyastuwa community, Sandada Ward, Bakori Local Government Area.
During a recent visit to the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) Primary School in Gyastuwa, the group reported that the school, once a vital centre of learning now lies in complete ruin after being destroyed by strong winds. According to the organisation, the classrooms have collapsed, leaving no safe space for pupils, many of whom have since stopped attending school.
“This tragic situation is not just about one school; it reflects the wider decay of public education in Katsina State,” Moting stated. “Year after year, billions of naira are allocated to the education sector, yet communities like Gyastuwa remain abandoned and forgotten.”
The organisation accused both past and present administrations of neglecting basic education, saying the current government led by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has failed to make meaningful investments in rebuilding schools or improving infrastructure despite substantial budgetary allocations.
Moting also criticised the state’s failure to utilise funds released by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), noting that ₦121 billion was disbursed to 27 states and the FCT, yet Katsina’s share remains largely unspent.
“The neglect is so severe that many children are being denied their constitutional right to education, a right that should never be negotiable,” the group said.
It urged Governor Radda to take urgent action to rebuild Gyastuwa Primary School and overhaul the state’s education system, warning that continued inaction would further entrench poverty and hopelessness among young people.
“Education is the foundation of progress. The government must prioritise it now — our children’s future depends on it,” the statement concluded.
