The Federal Government has concluded plans to establish a University of Birmingham campus in Lagos by January 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa disclosed this following a visit to the University of Birmingham’s Dubai Campus where discussions were held with the institution’s leadership to finalise the partnership.
The proposed University of Birmingham Lagos Campus will offer a balanced focus on undergraduate and postgraduate education with a 50 per cent allocation to each. It will prioritise postgraduate training in key STEMM disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Engineering, Life Sciences and Data Science.
According to Alausa the initiative is designed to build a pipeline of skilled professionals to meet the demands of Nigeria’s growing economy and support the Federal Government’s target of achieving a one trillion dollar economy by 2030.
The planned establishment follows earlier engagements between the university’s senior management and the National Universities Commission as well as five Nigerian universities. The University of Lagos was eventually selected as the partner institution for the Birmingham campus in Nigeria.
Alausa who met with top officials at the Dubai campus including Chief Operating Officer Ben Bailey, Provost Professor Yusra Mouzughi and Director of Commercial Partnerships Cathy Gilbert described the visit as productive and promising.
He said feedback from Nigerian students currently studying at the Dubai campus highlighted the university’s teaching quality and global academic standards reinforcing confidence in replicating the model in Nigeria.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s six point NESRI Agenda which focuses on strengthening STEMM education, expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training, promoting digitalisation and ensuring quality assurance across the education sector.
Alausa described the partnership as a significant milestone in the transformation of Nigeria’s education sector and a strategic investment in the country’s human capital.
The final agreement for the establishment of the Lagos campus is expected to be signed in January 2026.
