The 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), currently ongoing at the University of Jos, continues to thrill fans with electrifying basketball performances as both male and female teams battled fiercely in the second round of the group stage on Monday, November 10, 2025. The atmosphere was charged with passion, energy, and school pride as universities across Nigeria showcased skill, teamwork, and resilience on the court.

The highlight of the day came from Bayero University Kano (BUK) Female Basketball Team, who launched their title campaign with a commanding 55–11 demolition of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL). The match was a complete show of dominance and tactical precision, with BUK’s star player, Princess Zaki, putting up an extraordinary performance by scoring 38 out of the team’s 55 points. Her performance was nothing short of sensational, earning her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award of the match. Supporting her were teammates Theresa David, Cherry, Fatima, and Eunice, who worked cohesively to maintain their strong defensive line and orchestrate smooth offensive transitions throughout the four quarters.

Speaking after the game, Professor Rabiu Mohammed, BUK’s Director of Sports, applauded the team’s stellar performance and urged them to remain focused as they aim for the gold medal. “This victory is a reflection of preparation, discipline, and determination. You have made the university proud, and we will continue to support you all the way,” he said. Coach Sunusi Shuaibu (Badway) also expressed satisfaction with the team’s effort, attributing the win to hard work and mental strength. “This victory is a morale booster for us, but we are not getting carried away. Our eyes are fixed on the championship,” he emphasized.

Adding to the excitement, Modibbo Adama University, Yola (MAU) pulled off a narrow but impressive 45–41 victory over Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) in a high-tension match that blended sportsmanship with cultural flair. The game was as entertaining off the court as it was on it, as fans from both sides filled the arena with colorful chants, songs, and drumming that reflected Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity.

Elsewhere, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) female team displayed dominance in their encounter against Lagos State University (LASU), securing a convincing 52–26 win. The ABU ladies showcased excellent ball coordination and sharp shooting, outpacing LASU in all four quarters of the game to establish themselves as strong contenders for the knockout stages.

In the male category, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) outclassed Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Makurdi (MOUAU) with a 26–18 victory. The FUTA team, known for their strategic passing and defensive discipline, maintained control of the game from the opening whistle to the final buzzer, marking an important win in their campaign for qualification to the next round.

The host institution, University of Jos (UNIJOS), also lived up to expectations as their female basketball team delighted home fans with a spectacular 68–22 triumph over Osun State University (UNIOSUN). The arena erupted in cheers as the UNIJOS ladies put on a breathtaking performance, showcasing both offensive flair and defensive precision. Their teamwork and composure throughout the game underscored their determination to make the host university proud.

Meanwhile, Nile University, Abuja male basketball team also had reason to celebrate as they defeated University of Benin (UNIBEN) 52–32 in a thrilling contest. The Nile University side displayed high-level athleticism, coordination, and shooting accuracy, effectively dismantling UNIBEN’s defense and consolidating their place as one of the top-performing teams in the tournament so far.

To round off the day’s basketball action, the female team of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) stunned spectators with a well-earned 39–17 victory over Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD). NSUK’s players showed impressive energy, teamwork, and commitment, capitalizing on every scoring opportunity to secure a comfortable win.

With these results, the NUGA 2025 basketball tournament continues to live up to expectations, blending sportsmanship, competitiveness, and youthful passion. As the games progress into more decisive rounds, fans can expect even more thrilling encounters and standout performances from Nigeria’s rising basketball stars.
