The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has officially launched its first line of smart devices, a smartphone and smartwatch brand named OAK-io during a symposium on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics in Clinical Practice held on campus.
The event, which brought together academics, innovators, health professionals, and technology enthusiasts, showcased the university’s growing commitment to advancing AI-driven solutions for healthcare and education.
The highlight of the symposium was the unveiling of the OAK-io smartphone and smartwatch, products developed through the university’s ICT-Driven Knowledge Park initiative. The project represents a milestone in OAU’s pursuit of technological innovation and homegrown tech entrepreneurship.
According to the organisers, OAK-io short for Obafemi Awolowo Knowledge Innovation Orbit aims to provide affordable, durable, and AI-integrated devices designed to meet Africa’s emerging technological needs, especially in clinical and academic environments.
Speaking at the launch, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Simeon Bamire, described the project as a bold step toward achieving Nigeria’s digital transformation goals through research-driven innovation. He commended the university’s tech team and partners for demonstrating that Nigerian institutions can compete globally in smart technology production.
“The OAK-io brand is not just about producing gadgets; it is about integrating artificial intelligence into everyday learning and healthcare delivery. This innovation places OAU at the forefront of the digital revolution in Africa,” he said.
He added that the devices were developed with strong considerations for data security, affordability, and adaptability to African climates, ensuring they remain both functional and sustainable for users across the continent.
The symposium also featured panel discussions on the role of AI and robotics in medical diagnosis, patient monitoring, and clinical decision-making. Experts highlighted the potential of locally developed technologies to address healthcare challenges such as limited access to diagnostic equipment and specialist shortages.
The Director of the ICT-Driven Knowledge Park, Dr. (Mrs.) Olufunmilayo Adebayo, noted that OAK-io would serve as a foundation for Nigeria’s growing digital health ecosystem. “This is a defining moment for indigenous innovation. OAU is demonstrating that we can build smart technologies that reflect African needs, values, and realities,” she said.
The event concluded with demonstrations of the OAK-io smart devices, showcasing their features such as AI health monitoring, educational integration tools, and energy-efficient systems. Participants lauded OAU’s leadership for promoting innovation that merges academic excellence with real-world problem-solving.
