Nigeria has recorded a major milestone in global higher education performance following the inclusion of 24 universities in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, released on January 21. This marks the highest representation by any Sub-Saharan African country in the subject-based global rankings.
The 2026 THE Subject Rankings assessed universities across 11 academic disciplines, including Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Computer Science, Education Studies, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences. Nigerian institutions featured across multiple global bands, reflecting uneven but expanding international visibility.
In Law, Nigeria recorded its strongest global placement. The University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) both ranked in the 301–400 global band, placing them among the world’s top institutions in legal education and research.
The Medical and Health subject rankings showed the widest Nigerian spread. The University of Ibadan ranked in the 301–400 band, followed by the University of Lagos in the 401–500 band. Several institutions clustered in the 601–800 band, while others appeared in the 801–1000 and 1000+ categories, reflecting varying research depth and global influence.
In Computer Science, Landmark University emerged in the 501–600 band, while Covenant University and the University of Ilorin ranked within the 601–800 band, indicating Nigeria’s growing participation in computing and digital research.
The Physical Sciences rankings placed Federal University of Technology Minna, Landmark University, and the University of Ilorin in the 601–800 band, with several other Nigerian universities distributed across the 801–1000, 1001–1250, and 1250+ bands.
In the Social Sciences, Covenant University and the University of Ibadan ranked in the 501–600 band, followed by the University of Lagos in the 601–800 band, while other Nigerian universities appeared in the 801–1000 and 1000+ categories.
Nigeria had a single representative in Psychology, with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka ranking in the 501–600 global band, making it the country’s only entry in that subject for 2026.
To qualify for subject rankings, universities were required to meet strict publication thresholds—including a minimum of 500 research outputs over five years for STEM fields and 100 publications for Law and Education—as well as defined academic staffing benchmarks.
The THE Subject Rankings use 18 performance indicators grouped under Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry Income, offering a discipline-specific assessment rather than a general institutional ranking.
The 2026 results provide a clearer picture of where Nigerian universities are gaining international traction and where significant gaps remain, particularly in research output, citation impact, and global collaboration.
