A reported explosion threat on Thursday forced Avi-Cenna International School and Grange School, two private institutions in Lagos, to suspend physical academic activities as security agencies moved in to assess the situation.
Avi-Cenna International School announced its closure in a letter signed by Paul Olubajo and addressed to parents and guardians. The school disclosed that its management received a text message threatening a fire explosion on its premises.
According to the statement, the school immediately alerted the police, who deployed a special unit to assess the situation. Although the security team reportedly confirmed that the premises were safe after a thorough investigation, the school management decided to suspend activities for the day as a precautionary measure.
“We wish to inform you that we received a text message about a fire explosion threat. The police authorities were immediately informed, and they deployed their special unit with their devices to the school. After a thorough assessment of the entire premises, they confirmed that the premises are safe. However, school will remain closed for today,” the letter read.
The management apologised for the disruption, assuring parents and guardians that the safety of students, staff and the entire school community remains its priority.
Similarly, Grange School announced the temporary closure of its campus on Thursday. In a letter signed by the school head, Richard McMahon, the management stated that although there was no immediate danger, it was necessary to act responsibly by taking precautionary steps.
The school explained that the closure would allow it to follow up with relevant authorities and receive official guidance, while online classes would be organised for students during the period.
“While there is no immediate danger, we have chosen to act responsibly by taking the matter seriously and putting all necessary safety measures in place,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the reported threat has been neutralised. In a statement by its spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, the command said a team led by the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, was deployed to the affected schools.
The team, according to the police, included personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
The police assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place and urged the public to remain calm.
