Eyewitnesses told The Nigeria Education News that the sight of armed operatives patrolling areas close to the school environment caused students to flee in different directions. “We suddenly saw people running. Nobody really understood what was happening, but once we noticed security operatives, fear spread immediately,” a student recounted. Another student added, “It was the worst timing because many of us were preparing for or already writing exams.”
Videos circulating online, reviewed by The Nigeria Education News, reportedly showed an officer chasing a student, further escalating anxiety. Although the full context of the footage remains unclear, students described the situation as chaotic. “Even if nothing was happening inside the school, the fear alone disrupted everything,” one eyewitness stated.
In reaction, some aggrieved students staged a protest, expressing frustration over the incident. Reports indicate that tyres were set ablaze along the Old Jebba Road leading to the institution, temporarily disrupting movement. When The Nigeria Education News visited the scene, traces of burnt tyres were still visible, suggesting the intensity of the demonstration.
Security presence was immediately reinforced, with officers deployed to strategic points to prevent escalation. A police van from a nearby division was stationed at the main gate, while campus security personnel worked to restore order. Another student told The Nigeria Education News, “Our priority was to calm the situation and ensure that no student was harmed.”
In an official response, the management of clarified that the EFCC operation did not take place within the campus but in a neighboring community identified as . “The incident originated from reports of security operatives carrying out official duties in a nearby area, which understandably caused concern among students,” the statement read.
The institution further assured that no student was arrested during the operation and emphasized that only a small group participated in the protest. Management also commended the swift intervention of combined security agencies, noting that the situation was contained without major escalation.
Despite the disruption, the Polytechnic maintained that academic activities continued as scheduled. “Students scheduled for examinations were attended to by invigilators, and exams are ongoing,” the statement added, while urging parents and the public to remain calm.
