The Student Union Government (SUG) of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has announced the temporary suspension of the recently introduced increase in tricycle (keke) transportation fare within and around the campus, following growing concerns from students over the new pricing structure.
In an official statement released by the Union, it was noted that the fare, which had been increased from ₦100 to ₦150, triggered immediate reactions across the student body, prompting swift intervention by student leaders to prevent further dissatisfaction.
According to the SUG leadership of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, the decision to suspend the new fare was reached after careful consideration of students’ welfare and the prevailing economic challenges affecting the campus community.
The Union confirmed that, with immediate effect, the previous fare of ₦100 remains the approved transport rate within the school environment pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders.
“As of now, the status quo remains, and all students are advised to continue paying the initial fare of ₦100 until further notice,” the statement read.
The SUG further disclosed that it is currently engaging tricycle operators and other relevant stakeholders within Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, ahead of a roundtable discussion aimed at arriving at a fair and mutually acceptable transport arrangement.
Student leaders emphasized that the suspension is a temporary measure designed to ease tension and ensure stability while negotiations are ongoing.
They also urged students of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, to remain calm, peaceful, and cooperative as discussions progress, assuring that their welfare remains the central focus of the Union.
“We are committed to ensuring that any decision taken reflects the best interest of the student community,” the Union added.
Further updates are expected to be communicated to students as engagements with transport operators continue in the coming days.
