The Gombe State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the death of a student of the Federal University Kashere (FUK), whose body was recovered from a stagnant water body in Akko Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns about student safety and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased, identified as Enoch Sunday Maisamari, 28, was a student of the Federal University Kashere. According to the police, his lifeless body was discovered at Sabon Garin Yero Village after authorities received a report on the morning of July 22, prompting officers to visit the scene and begin preliminary investigations.
Police spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, explained that officers immediately evacuated the body to the General Hospital in Kashere, where medical personnel officially confirmed the student’s death. Initial observations, he said, did not reveal any visible signs of physical assault or external injuries on the body, making it difficult to immediately determine the cause of death.
Investigators are now working to establish the events leading to the student’s death, including how he ended up in the stagnant water. The command noted that detectives are examining all possible circumstances surrounding the incident and have not ruled out any line of inquiry while awaiting further findings from the ongoing investigation.
The incident has generated concern within the university community, where students and residents have been seeking answers about the tragic development. While the police have appealed for calm, many are hoping that the investigation will provide clarity and determine whether the death resulted from an accident, a medical emergency or any other circumstance requiring criminal investigation.
The Federal University Kashere, one of the Federal Government-owned universities in North-East Nigeria, has continued to expand its academic programmes and student population over the years. The latest incident has renewed conversations about the importance of safety measures within and around university communities, particularly in off-campus locations frequently occupied or visited by students.
Law enforcement authorities emphasised that no conclusions should be drawn until investigations are completed. The command assured the public that every relevant lead would be pursued and that appropriate action would be taken should evidence of foul play emerge during the course of the inquiry.
Police also encouraged members of the public with useful information relating to the student’s movements before his death to cooperate with investigators, noting that public assistance could help establish an accurate timeline of events.
