The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially started disbursing the ₦77,000 monthly allowance to Corps members across the country, fulfilling a promise made earlier this year. The announcement, initially made in January, has now been fully implemented, with NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, confirming the payments. This was further reaffirmed by the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, in an interview earlier this week.
As the payments roll out, some Corps members nationwide have confirmed receiving the new allowance for the month of March. This increase is viewed by many as a response to the financial challenges Corps members face during their service year, including expenses for transportation, accommodation, and personal needs.
On social media, Corps members have shared their reactions. One Corps member, @ay_tide, tweeted on X
“Me sef don receive my own. Make una drop aza sharp.”
In interviews with NgEducationNews, some Corps members shared their thoughts. One said, “The new allowance will at least ease some of our financial pressures. It’s good to see the government follow through on its promise.”
Another Corps member added, “Finally, I won’t have to borrow for the rest of my service year. This is a relief.”
This development is expected to bring succor to NYSC Corps members, who have faced financial challenges in recent times due to inflation. The ₦77,000 monthly allowance will provide vital support, helping Corps members manage their service year more effectively.
