Lagos State University (LASU) is facing mounting criticism following reports that final-year Agriculture students at its Epe Campus were allegedly subjected to harsh punishment by the Faculty Dean, Professor O.T.F. Abanikannda, for failing to offer routine greetings.
According to Lagos-based student publication EkoBulletin, the students — all in their 400 level — were made to stay outside for hours in unfavorable weather conditions and were verbally abused over what many have described as “petty issues,” including not saying “good night” to the Dean.
In a statement issued on 18 May, EkoBulletin described the reported actions as “inhumane and unjust,” calling it a clear abuse of authority. The group urged the university management to launch a full investigation and demanded swift intervention from the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education.
“This is not just a disciplinary matter. It is a moral and administrative test for LASU and every institution of learning. No student should be punished for failing to show loyalty through greetings,” the statement read in part.
The group further called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who serves as Visitor to the university, to wade into the matter. They also appealed to the Federal Ministry of Education and the Presidency to ensure that national standards for student welfare and human rights are upheld.
As at the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the university authorities or the Dean involved.
Civil society organizations, student unions, LASU alumni, and members of the public have been urged to speak out and demand accountability.
