The University of Calabar’s Governing Council and Senate have officially promoted Dr. Stephen Adi Odey to the academic rank of Professor, recognizing his exceptional achievements in scholarship, leadership, and public service.
A distinguished academic, Professor Odey’s interdisciplinary journey includes degrees in Education (B.Ed), Law (LL.B), Environmental Law (LL.M), Industrial Sociology (M.Sc), and dual doctorates in Law and Industrial Sociology. He also earned his call to the Nigerian Bar (B.L) and holds a certificate in computer proficiency.
His career spans service as Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calabar where he has supervised numerous postgraduate theses and coordinated research initiatives as well as a legal practitioner through his firm, Dr. Stephen A. Odey & Associates.
Beyond academia, Professor Odey’s public service record is extensive. He served as Executive Chairman of the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Acting Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board Limited, and currently holds the position of Commissioner for Education in Cross River State. He also served in Nigeria’s Senate (2020–2021), where he sponsored several key bills, including the establishment of the Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Ogoja.
A prolific scholar and editorial leader, Odey has contributed to numerous academic journals across Sociology, Education, and Law, and participates in more than ten professional bodies, including the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Practitioners Association (NASA), the Centre for African American Research Studies (CAARS), and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
