The Special Matriculation Ceremony of fresh postgraduate students for the 2024/2025 academic session has provided an opportunity to highlight the significant accomplishments that Redeemer’s University has recorded over the years, as the institution proudly marks its 20th anniversary.
The colourful event, which was held on September 3 at the institution’s main auditorium, drew together faculty members, dignitaries, parents, and newly admitted postgraduate students. It was not just a rite of passage for the students but also a celebration of the institution’s journey from its humble beginnings to becoming a global academic force.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrach Olufemi, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Aderonmu, welcomed the new students warmly. He reminded them that their admission into Redeemer’s University was not only a mark of their academic excellence but also a call to join a community dedicated to faith, knowledge, and service.

“Your decision to study here reflects your ambition and discernment, and we are honoured to have you,” he said. “As you take the matriculation oath today, remember that you are not merely enrolling in programmes; you are becoming part of a legacy that emphasises Running with a Vision—a vision rooted in integrity, excellence, and holistic development.”
Professor Olufemi underscored the significance of this year’s matriculation by linking it with the university’s 20th Anniversary. According to him, the dual celebration symbolised both the personal beginning of the students’ advanced studies and the collective achievements of the university in its two decades of existence.
Highlighting the university’s international accomplishments, the Vice-Chancellor proudly announced that Redeemer’s University had made a remarkable debut in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. The institution was ranked #2 overall in Nigeria and placed within the 201–300 band globally, an achievement that cements its place as one of the most impactful institutions in the country.
A particularly notable achievement, he explained, was the university’s ranking as the best in Africa for SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, placing 42nd worldwide. This feat, he added, was a direct reflection of Redeemer’s University’s groundbreaking research and practical community initiatives aimed at improving water management, hygiene, and sanitation, particularly in Osun State communities.
Equally, Redeemer’s University ranked first in Nigeria and sixth in Africa for SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, a recognition that validates the institution’s strong health sciences programmes and medical research facilities. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the contributions of the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) and the Institute of Genomics and Health (IGH) as world-class centres that have placed the university on the global health map.
The university’s performance in SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, where it secured third place nationally, further demonstrated its holistic approach to nation-building and societal development. Professor Olufemi noted that these global recognitions were not just ceremonial accolades but evidence of the institution’s commitment to aligning education with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“Our researchers have developed affordable water purification technologies, advanced telemedicine solutions, and community health initiatives,” he said. “These projects are making tangible differences both locally and globally. In our 20th year, we are more determined than ever to integrate sustainability principles into our teaching, learning, and campus operations.”
The Vice-Chancellor went further to speak about Redeemer’s University’s academic productivity, revealing that faculty members had collectively published over 500 high-impact research papers in the last five years. According to him, these contributions have enriched global knowledge while ensuring that Nigerian research occupies a prominent place in international scholarly discussions.
He also celebrated the growing global influence of the university’s alumni, many of whom have gone on to occupy important roles in the World Health Organisation, multinational corporations, and top Nigerian institutions. Their success, he explained, is a testament to the institution’s ability to train leaders who make a difference across diverse sectors.
To cap it all, Professor Olufemi highlighted the introduction of innovative postgraduate programmes in emerging fields tailored to meet the demands of the 21st-century economy. With state-of-the-art laboratories, digital platforms, and international collaborations with leading universities in the UK, USA, and South Africa, Redeemer’s University is deliberately positioning its students to thrive in an interconnected and competitive world.
The Special Matriculation Ceremony, therefore, was more than a formal induction; it was a bold statement of how far Redeemer’s University has come and where it is headed. For the fresh postgraduate students, the ceremony was not just about wearing gowns and swearing an oath; it was about stepping into a legacy of excellence that continues to grow stronger with every passing year.
