The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED)has honoured its student athletes at a colourful ceremony that highlighted the institution’s growing impact in university sports at both national and international levels.
The recognition event took place on April 16, 2026. It was organised by the Directorate of Sports, which formally presented medals and trophies won across major competitions to the Vice Chancellor. The occasion marked a proud moment for the university community.
The ceremony was held at the Multimedia Complex of the Vice Chancellor’s Office and brought together management staff, sports officials, and athletes who represented the institution at the West African University Games, the International University Sports Federation World University Games, the Federation of African University Sports competitions, and the Nigerian University Games Association events.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji Okuneye, reflected on her personal experience as a former student athlete. She emphasized the role of sports in building confidence, discipline, resilience, and social development. She noted that sports go beyond physical activity and serve as a platform for life skills development and positive engagement.

She also reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to student development, describing sports as a constructive avenue that encourages teamwork, discipline, and focus. According to her, the athletes have chosen a path that reflects dedication and positive representation of the university.
Other members of the university management also commended the athletes. The Registrar, Mr Akinfemiwa Opeoluwa, congratulated them and urged them to sustain their winning momentum. The Bursar, Mr Ganiu Ajose Adeniyi, described the athletes as ambassadors who have enhanced the reputation of the institution.
The Director of Internal Audit, Mr Nojeem Isiaka, encouraged the team to aim higher in future competitions, with a particular target of securing a top three finish at upcoming Nigerian University Games Association events.
The Dean of the College of Specialized and Professional Education, Professor Melekeowie, who represented the Vice Chancellor at some of the competitions, praised the athletes for their performance and discipline, noting that the university competed confidently and returned with honour.
In recognition of her support for sports development, the Vice Chancellor received special medals from both the Federation of African University Sports and the Nigerian University Games Association, further reflecting the administration’s role in the institution’s sporting progress.
Officials also highlighted LASUED’s international presence, noting that the university was represented at the International University Sports Federation World University Games in Germany by standout athletes including Jesse Jonah and Florence, who competed in Taekwondo and contributed to Nigeria’s visibility on the global stage.
The Director of Sports, Dr Adeniyi Jimmy, attributed the university’s rising profile in sports to strong institutional support, stating that LASUED is steadily becoming a force in university competitions.
The event concluded with the formal decoration of athletes. The Vice Chancellor presented gold medals, while the Registrar and Bursar presented silver and bronze medals respectively, symbolising a shared commitment to excellence.
