The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) has announced the immediate suspension of all after-parties and late-night gatherings within and around the campus following the tragic death of three students in a stampede that occurred shortly after the institution’s convocation ceremony.
The directive was contained in a safety advisory issued on Sunday, as the union moved to address rising concerns over student safety in the wake of the incident.
According to the SUG, the decision was prompted by “prevailing and uncontrollable circumstances,” particularly the recent tragedy which has sent shockwaves across the university community.
Sources within the institution confirmed that the stampede occurred as large crowds surged in the aftermath of the convocation event, leading to chaos that resulted in the loss of three student lives.
In response, the union declared an immediate ban on all after-parties and late-night social gatherings, especially those connected to campus events, until further notice.
“This decision has been taken in the best interest of all students,” the statement read, emphasizing that safeguarding lives remains the union’s top priority.
The SUG warned that any student who disregards the directive would be doing so at their own risk, adding that it would not be held liable for consequences arising from non-compliance.
It also disclosed that it is engaging relevant stakeholders, including school authorities and security agencies, to review safety protocols and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
The advisory urged students to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative during this period of mourning and heightened security awareness.
Students were further encouraged to avoid overcrowded environments and prioritize their personal safety, particularly during large gatherings.
The tragic incident has sparked renewed conversations around crowd control, event management, and emergency preparedness within Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Observers note that while convocation ceremonies are celebratory milestones, they also require strict safety planning to manage large crowds effectively.
The SUG assured students that further updates would be communicated as investigations continue and new safety measures are implemented.
The development underscores the urgent need for improved safety frameworks to protect students during major institutional events.
